Post-Baccalaureate Certification Program (click bold for more information)

If you have a Bachelor's degree and are NOT certified to teach in Connecticut in any other subject area and you want a program that will lead to certification to teach Art pre-kindergarten through twelfth grades in Connecticut, then you need information about our Post-Baccalaureate Certification program.  In this program, you only take courses that you have not taken. You and your advisor will review your transcript(s) to determine which courses you must take and will develop a Planned Program of Study.

If you hold a Connecticut valid teaching certificate in another subject area and you want to also be certified to teach Art, then you need more information about Cross-endorsement from the State.

Two-step Application Process. (see below for details)

  1. First, students must be accepted into the School of Graduate Studies at CCSU.
     
  2. After acceptance into the Graduate School, students must be admitted into the Professional Teaching Program in the School of Education and Professional Studies.

Procedure

  1. Even though all the courses you will take will be undergraduate, because you have a degree, you must apply to the School of Graduate Studies at Central Connecticut State University.
     
  2. After acceptance, you will meet with your advisor and develop a Planned Program of Study.   In your Planned Program, you only take courses from the  Advisement Sheet that you have not already taken.  [Click here to go to the Worksheet for the Post-Bac Planned Program.]
     
  3. Meet with your advisor each semester. Follow your planned program for General Education Requirements and Studio Courses you need.
     
  4. Maintain at least a 2.7 GPA in non-art courses and 3.0 GPA in your art courses.
     
  5. If you were in the program before July 2004, then after you have completed most of your 200 level studio courses, take the Art Department's Portfolio Review. If you applied after July 1, 2004, then the Portfolio Review was part of the Admissions process and it does not have to be reviewed again.
     
  6. In addition, to be accepted into the Professional Teaching Program, you must take the PRAXIS I test series or receive a waiver.  The test should be taken early to allow time for you to have the results for the Professional Teaching Program application packet.
     
  7. After you have completed most of you general education courses and art courses on your Planned Program, and have PASSED the Department of Art's Portfolio Review, then you should apply to the Professional Teaching Program in the School of Education and Professional Studies.  Application packets can be found at the School of Education and Professional Studies in Barnard Hall. You must be accepted into the Professional Teaching Program in order to take restricted Education and Art Education courses. Deadlines for application are September  10 and February 10 of each semester. If the dates fall on a Saturday or Sunday, check with your advisor or the School of Education and Professional Studies for the revised dates.
     
  8. After you have been accepted into the Professional Teaching Program, you may begin taking restricted courses.

  10. To determine how long the program will take, count the number of courses in your planned program.  Divide that number by the number of courses you are going to take each semester including summer school. That will be the number of semester you will need to do the program. Keep in mind that certain Art Education courses--Art 301, 302 with 303 (Pre-requisite Art 301), 400 (pre-requisite Art 303), and Art 403 (pre-requisite Art 303)--have pre-requisites and must be taken in sequence.  In addition, you can ONLY take Art 401 with Art 402 with your student teaching during your last semester.
