Department of Art: Advisement


Bachelor of Science in Art Education - 130 Credits (click for more information)

The School of Education and Professional Studies in conjunction with the Department of Art offer the Bachelor of Science in Education that leads to Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade teaching certification in Art Education in Connecticut.

Two-step Application Process for Art Education Majors (read below for details)

  1. First, students must apply and be accepted into CCSU.
     
  2. After completion of at least  45 credits (15 of which must be earned at CCSU), students must apply and be admitted into the Professional Teaching Program in the School of Education and Professional Studies.

Procedure (click bold phrase for more information)

  1. Apply to Central Connecticut State University.
     
  2. Meet with your advisor and obtain an Advisement Sheet for a major in Art Education.
     
  3. Meet with your advisor each semester. Follow advisement sheet for General Education Requirements and Studio Courses.
     
  4. Maintain at least a 2.7 GPA in non-art courses and 3.0 GPA in your art courses.
     
  5. After you have completed most of your 200 level studio courses, take the Art Department's Portfolio Review.
     
  6. In addition, to be accepted into the Professional Teaching Program, you must take the PRAXIS I test series or receive a waiver.  The test should be taken early to allow time for you to have the results for the Professional Teaching Program application packet.
     
  7. After you have completed most of you general education courses and art courses (at least 45 credits, 15 of which have been earned at CCSU*), you should apply to the Professional Teaching Program in the School of Education and Professional Studies. Application packets can be found at the School of Education and Professional Studies in Barnard Hall. You must be accepted into the Professional Teaching Program in order to take restricted Education and Art Education courses. Deadlines for application are September  10 and February 10 of each semester. If the dates fall on a Saturday or Sunday, check with your advisor or the School of Education and Professional Studies for the revised dates.
     *Graduates of CT Community Colleges see Dean of Education for possible waiver.
     
  8. After you have been accepted into the Professional Teaching Program, you may begin taking restricted courses.

Art Department Portfolio Review

The Art Department Portfolio Review is given each semester and is required of all students in the department. You must pass the review before you can take 300 and above level art courses. Click here for more information.
