BACHELOR of SCIENCE in ART EDUCATION
The certification program for the P-12 art educator offered by the
Department of Art is designed to prepare well-educated and competent
art teachers to assume the responsibilities of planning and
executing elementary and secondary art programs that include
instruction in art production, art history and culture, art
criticism, and aesthetics; to assume leadership for promoting the
art program and the need for art education; and to demonstrate
professionalism through involvement in community activities and
professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels.

The School of Education and
Professional Studies in conjunction with the Department of Art offer
the Bachelor of Science in Education that leads to Pre-Kindergarten
through 12th grade teaching certification in Art Education in
Connecticut.
Two-step
Application Process for Art Education Majors (read below for
details)
- First, students must apply and
be accepted into CCSU.
- After completion of at least 45
credits (15 of which must be earned at CCSU), students must
apply and be admitted into the Professional Teaching Program in
the School of Education and Professional Studies.
Procedure

- Apply to
Central
Connecticut State University.

Meet with your advisor
and obtain an Advisement Sheet
for a major in Art Education.
- Meet with your advisor each
semester. Follow advisement sheet for
General Education Requirements and
Studio
Courses.
- Maintain at least a 2.7 GPA in
non-art courses and 3.0 GPA in your art courses.
- After you have completed most of
your 200 level studio courses, take the
Art Department's Portfolio
Review.
- In addition, to be accepted into
the Professional Teaching Program, you must take the
PRAXIS I test series
or receive a
waiver. The test should be taken early to allow time
for you to have the results for the Professional Teaching
Program application packet.
- After you have completed
most of you general education courses and art courses (at least
45 credits, 15 of which have been earned at CCSU*), you should
apply to the
Professional Teaching Program in the School of Education and
Professional Studies. Application packets can be found
at the School of Education and Professional Studies in Barnard
Hall. You must be accepted into the Professional Teaching
Program in order to take restricted Education and Art Education
courses. Deadlines for application are September 10 and
February 10 of each semester. If the dates fall on a Saturday or
Sunday, check with your advisor or the School of Education and
Professional Studies for the revised dates.
*Graduates of CT Community Colleges
see Dean of Education for possible waiver.
- After you have been accepted
into the
Professional Teaching Program, you may begin taking
restricted courses.

Art Department Portfolio Review
The Art Department Portfolio
Review is given each semester and is required of all students in the
department. You must pass the review before you can take 300 and
above level art courses.
