History of Western Art II - Prereq.: ART 112. Continuation of ART 112. A survey of paintings, sculpture, and architecture from the Renaissance to the present. ART 120 - Design I. Credits: 3.00. Design I —Exploration of spatial division, color, aesthetic theories, and their relationships to typical design problems in two dimensions. ART 124 - Three-Dimensional Design. Credits: 3.00. Three-Dimensional Design —Introduction to design elements of architecture, environment design, sculpture, etc. Construction of three-dimensional assemblages required. ART 130 - Drawing I. Credits: 3.00. Drawing I —An investigation of the components of drawing: line quality, volume, value, space, and composition. Exercises are designed to strengthen the student's ability to see, while developing hand to eye coordination. ART 240 - Printmaking I. Credits: 3.00. Printmaking I - Prereq.: ART 120 or ART 130. Introduction to the technical processes and the aesthetic possibilities of lithography, intaglio and silkscreen. Fall. ART 252 - Painting I. Credits: 3.00. Painting I - Prereq.: ART130. Exploration of techniques of painting in still life, landscape, and creative composition. ART 260 - Ceramics I. Credits: 3.00. Ceramics I - Functional and non-functional design in clay and glaze using various techniques. ART 261 - Sculpture I. Credits: 3.00. Sculpture I - Prereq.: ART 124. Introduction to creative sculpture: modeling, carving, constructing, and assembling. Clay, firebrick, mass-produced objects, and plaster will be used to develop figurative, abstract, and non-objective sculpture. ART 263 - Crafts I. Credits: 3.00. Crafts I - Creative structuring of materials and ideas into art forms through the use of tools and processes. Open to majors only. ART 301 - Art Education Theory & Practice I. Credits: 3.00. Art Education Theory and Practice I - Prereq.: ART 120, 130, 112, 252, 260, 240, or permission of instructor. Previously ART 200. Contemporary principles and practices in education through art in the elementary schools. Theories, materials, and processes applicable to these levels will be explored and evaluated. Field experience required. ART 302 - Pre-Practicum in Art Education. Credits: 1.00. Pre-Practicum in Art Education - Prereq.: ART 301. Taken concurrently with ART 303. Eight-week pre- student teaching requirement involving on-site class- room visits to assist with and observe a variety of public school settings accompanied by seminars. Contemporary theory and methods for art teachers of children in secondary grades. Comprehensive curriculum planning, materials and processes, and evaluation of teaching methods. The Art of Greece in the Bronze Age - Prereq.: Art 110 or 112 or 113. Introduction to the art of Greece in the Bronze Age. The artistic and cultural development of mainland Greece, Crete, the Aegean Islands, and Western Asia Minor from the Paleolithic to the end of the Bronze Age. Emphasis on the art of flourishing Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations. ART 409 - Studies in Art History. Credits: 3.00. Studies in Art History - Prereq.: Art 110 or 112 or 113. Selected topics in the history of art, announced each semester. Students may not take this course under the same topic more than once. ART 411 - Roman Art. Credits: 3.00. Oriental Art - Historical development of visual arts of Far Eastern societies: architecture, painting, sculpture, and minor arts of China, India, Japan, and Korea. Irregular. ART 414 - American Art. Credits: 3.00. American Art - Prereq.: ART 110 or 112 or 113. This course can be taken for the American Studies program. Historical development of painting, sculpture and architecture in America from the 17th century to the present. ART 416 - Modern Art. Credits: 3.00. Modern Art - Prereq.: Art 110 or 112 or 113. Historical development of painting, sculpture, and architecture from the late 19th century to the present. ART 420 - Issues in Contemporary Am Art. Credits: 3.00. Issues in Contemporary American Art - Prereq.: ART 110 or 112 or 113. American art post-World War II to the present with emphasis on topics such as post modernism, public sculpture, feminist art, multiculturalism and contemporary art criticism. Includes visits to Hartford and New York galleries.

Introductory course in black-and-white photography using a 35 mm camera. Includes contact printing, printmaking and enlarging, developing of film, and laboratory techniques. Styles and techniques of painting in transparent and opaque watercolors, with emphasis on individual creative expression. ART 264 - Design-Handcraft Materials and Techniques I. Credits: 3.00. Design-Handicraft Materials and Techniques I - Prereq.: ART 120 or 130. Varied handcrafts and materials are included. May not be substituted for Art 263. ART 270 - Mural Painting. Credits: 3.00. Mural Painting - Prereq.: ART 252 or permission of instructor. Introductory studio course of mural painting techniques - students develop, organize and execute group and individual public works.
